Childcare Allowance
A contribution toward daycare or kindergarten costs.
What is the childcare allowance?
The childcare allowance generally refers to an additional employer benefit for the accommodation and care of children who are not yet of school age. Official wage tax guidance specifically names kindergartens, daycare centers, nurseries, and family daycare as comparable facilities; care provided solely in the household, on the other hand, is not sufficient. The benefit is therefore not a general family allowance, but an instrument tied to specific childcare costs.
Why do companies use this benefit?
Companies use the allowance primarily where they want to support the compatibility of working hours and childcare hours. The federal program “Erfolgsfaktor Familie” (Success Factor Family) explicitly describes company-supported childcare as an important building block of a family-conscious corporate culture and points out that support with childcare can have a positive effect on employee satisfaction and motivation.
For HR and employers, it is relevant that the allowance is not necessarily tied to the company's own childcare places or a company daycare center. Official overviews from the IHK (Chamber of Industry and Commerce) and the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) list the childcare allowance as a distinct form of company-supported childcare alongside other models such as reserved daycare places, emergency care, or vacation care. As a result, the benefit is often easier to fit into existing benefit and compensation structures than more infrastructure-heavy solutions.
From a company perspective, the practical HR dimension is also relevant. Official information sources cite more flexible options for returning to work, fewer childcare-related absences, and easier recruitment and retention of skilled workers as typical effects of family-oriented childcare offerings. This makes the childcare allowance particularly interesting for employers who want to support parents in their working lives without building their own childcare facilities.

In practice
The childcare allowance is a particularly natural fit for companies that want to offer family-oriented support without creating childcare places themselves. This is precisely why official bodies list it as a separate model of company-supported childcare alongside company daycare centers, reserved daycare places, and other solutions. In practice, it therefore often suits companies that are looking for a low-threshold entry into family-conscious benefits or want to complement existing working-time and return-to-work models.
What to keep in mind
For tax and organizational questions, the specific structure is decisive. Official sources point out that the benefit must be provided in addition to the salary already owed; for cash allowances, proof that the funds were used for the intended purpose is also relevant, and the corresponding receipts must be kept as part of the payroll records. Which facilities can be included in an individual case and how the allowance is properly implemented in payroll should therefore be reviewed together with tax advisors, payroll, or other subject-matter experts.
The interaction with employees' individual tax matters can also play a role in individual cases. The German Federal Fiscal Court (Bundesfinanzhof), for example, has confirmed that tax-free employer contributions can be relevant when childcare costs are claimed as special expenses. This is precisely why a coordinated review of the specific structure is recommended before introducing or changing the benefit.
