Company Bike

A discounted bicycle or e-bike through your employer.

What is a company bike?

A company bike is a company-owned bicycle or pedelec that employers provide to employees for their use. In practice, implementation often takes place via a framework agreement with a provider, individual leasing contracts, provision of the bike to employees for their use, and, where applicable, an amendment to the employment contract. The German Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) explicitly describes this structure as the typical case of bicycle leasing within the employment relationship.

For tax and social security purposes, a distinction is made as to whether the bicycle is provided in addition to the salary already owed or is integrated through salary conversion. The classification also depends on whether the e-bike in question still counts as a bicycle under traffic law or must already be classified as a motor vehicle.

Why do companies use this benefit?

Companies use the company bike primarily where benefits are meant to be not just symbolic but actually usable in everyday life. This matches commuting data in Germany: almost half of all commuters travel less than ten kilometers to work, and it is precisely on short distances that the bicycle plays a realistic role. The benefit is therefore particularly suitable for companies that want to complement their employees' commute in a practical way.

Added to this is the operational value within broader mobility management. The IHK (Chamber of Industry and Commerce) explicitly describes corporate mobility as a field in which companies consider costs, accessibility, satisfaction, health aspects, and infrastructure requirements together. In this context, the company bike is not an isolated extra but rather a concrete instrument within a larger mobility offering.

For HR, benefit advisors, and employers, it is also relevant that the model is comparatively tangible: it is easy to communicate, has an immediate effect in everyday life, and can be standardized organizationally, provided that contracts, payroll, and internal processes are set up properly. This is exactly why the topic is often found at the intersection of compensation & benefits, mobility, and employer attractiveness.

In practice

The company bike is a particularly good fit for companies in urban or near-urban locations, where parking is scarce, in organizations with mobility or sustainability goals, and wherever a tangible, everyday benefit is desired. At the same time, the topic is not limited to large employers: IHK programs on corporate mobility management are explicitly aimed at companies of every size. The fact that a relevant share of employees have comparatively short commutes makes the benefit practical for many mid-sized companies as well.

What to keep in mind

If you introduce the model, you should not decide on the specific structure from an HR perspective alone. Official sources clearly distinguish between provision in addition to salary and salary conversion; in addition, the type of vehicle, the contract model, and a possible later purchase of the bicycle by employees can have consequences for taxes and social security contributions. It therefore makes sense to review the introduction together with tax advisors, payroll, and, where applicable, other subject-matter experts, and to clarify contractual and organizational questions properly in advance.
